ABOUT US

Our project was established in November 2005 as the Department of Geriatric Behavioral Neurology in the Graduate School of Medicine, Tohoku University. We moved our activities to CYRIC in 2014, and NICHe in April 2019.

The main purpose of our activities is "measures against dementia in the community based on brain science". In other words, we aim to examine treatment and comprehensive support for dementia patients (= "human") based on their activities of daily living (= "earth") and concerning their neural basis (= "heaven").

Based on this philosophy

  1. Research on the prevention of dementia (primary, secondary and tertiary) and design of an integrated community care system.
  2. Clinical research based on brain imaging and behavioral neurological findings of dementia diseases. Its application to nursing care and rehabilitation.
  3. Screening research for vulnerable people in disasters based on the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

We have been developing integrate medical care, research, and education in such fields as the following. We have deeply cooperated with medical institutions, welfare services, and government agencies in Osaki City, Kurihara City, Tome City, and Wakuya Town. We started to apply them to life support and medical cooperation through academic-industrial collaboration. Technology is meaningful only when it is useful to humans. However, modern technology is based on the so-called "healthy people" and leaves older adults and handicapped people behind. Our goal is to develop human-friendly technology through the study of brain function.

We have been conducting activities not only in Japan but also from an international perspective, including international joint research with Brazil and Taiwan, and lectures for graduate students from various countries. We put our everything into the 15th International Congress of the Asian Society Against Dementia in Sendai on November 8-10, 2021. We have hopefulness that the fusion of Western science and technology with Asian philosophy on humanity and care techniques will lead to innovations.
